Svalbard is a group of islands in the high Arctic.

It sits north of mainland Europe. The islands lie midway between the coast of Norway and the North Pole. They are located where the Arctic Ocean meets the Atlantic Ocean.

The largest island is Spitsbergen, which is 37,673 square kilometers. Other large islands include Nordaustlandet and Edgeøya. Much of the land is shaped by ice. Glaciers cover about 60% of the islands. These glaciers have cut the land into many mountains and deep fjords.

The weather in Svalbard is very cold. However, it is warmer than other places at the same latitude. This happens because of the Gulf Stream from the Atlantic Ocean. The light changes a lot during the year. In the summer, the sun stays up for many days. This is called the midnight sun. In the winter, the sun does not rise at all. This time is called the polar night. In Longyearbyen, the midnight sun lasts from April to August. The polar night lasts from October to February.

People have visited these islands for a long time. A Dutch explorer named Willem Barentsz saw the islands in 1596. He named the main island Spitsbergen because of its pointed mountains. Later, whalers used the islands as a base in the 1600s.

They hunted whales and walruses in the cold waters. In the 1900s, people began mining coal there. This led to the building of towns like Longyearbyen and Barentsburg.

Today, many people visit for tourism or to do science research.

Svalbard is part of the Kingdom of Norway. The Svalbard Treaty of 1920 gave Norway control over the islands. This treaty also makes Svalbard a free economic zone. It also says the islands cannot be used for military things. There are several small towns on the islands. Longyearbyen is the largest settlement. Other places include the Russian town of Barentsburg and the research station Ny-Ålesund.

There are no roads that connect these towns. People must use boats, planes, or snowmobiles to travel between them.

Life in Svalbard is special for both people and animals. Many seabirds use the islands to raise their young. You might also see reindeer, Arctic foxes, or polar bears.

Because the land is so fragile, much of it is protected. Seven national parks and 23 nature reserves cover two-thirds of the area. Scientists also work there to protect the future. They use the Svalbard Global Seed Vault to keep seeds safe. This helps ensure that plants can grow even if things change in the world.
