Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago located in the high Arctic.

It sits at the convergence of the Arctic Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. The islands lie north of mainland Europe. They are positioned roughly midway between the northern coast of Norway and the North Pole. The archipelago spans from 74° to 81° north latitude. It also extends from 10° to 35° east longitude. This region is a unique part of the Kingdom of Norway. However, it is not part of any Norwegian county. Instead, it is an unincorporated area administered directly by the Norwegian government.

The geography of Svalbard is defined by extreme ice and rugged landforms. Glaciers cover approximately 60% of the archipelago. These glaciers formed through repeated ice ages. During these periods, moving ice cut the land into deep fjords and valleys. The largest island is Spitsbergen, which covers 37,673 km². Other major islands include Nordaustlandet and Edgeøya. The largest glacier is Austfonna on Nordaustlandet. On the island of Kvitøya, glaciers cover 99.3% of the land. The landscape also features many high mountains. The tallest peak is Newtontoppen. The longest fjord is Wijdefjorden.

The climate in Svalbard is Arctic but surprisingly mild for its latitude. This warmth comes from the tail end of the Gulf Stream. This current flows from the Atlantic Ocean toward the islands. The light levels change drastically due to the Earth's tilt. Svalbard experiences the midnight sun during the summer. This is a period where the sun never sets. In Longyearbyen, this lasts from April 20 until August 23. Conversely, the islands experience the polar night in winter. During this time, the sun does not rise at all. In Longyearbyen, the polar night lasts from October 26 to February 15.

Human history in Svalbard began with discovery and hunting. The Dutch navigator Willem Barentsz sighted the islands in 1596. He named the main island Spitsbergen. This name means "pointed mountains" in Dutch. In the 17th and 18th centuries, whalers used the islands as a base. They hunted bowhead whales and walruses. Settlements like Smeerenburg were established by the Dutch in 1619.

Later, Russian hunters arrived to hunt polar bears and foxes. In the early 20th century, the focus shifted to coal mining. This industrial era led to the creation of permanent communities.

Legal and political rules govern the archipelago through international agreements. The Svalbard Treaty of 1920 recognizes Norwegian sovereignty. The Norwegian Svalbard Act of 1925 made it a full part of Norway. This treaty establishes Svalbard as a free economic zone. It also restricts the use of the islands for military purposes. Svalbard is outside the Schengen Area and the European Economic Area. Because of these rules, the archipelago has a special legal status. It is administered by an appointed governor. This allows for a unique mix of international activity and Norwegian control.

Modern life in Svalbard relies on research, tourism, and mining. Longyearbyen is the largest settlement. Other communities include the Russian mining town of Barentsburg.

The Norwegian station Ny-Ålesund and the Polish station Hornsund focus on science. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault plays a critical role in the local economy. There are no roads connecting the different settlements. Instead, people use snowmobiles, aircraft, and boats for transport.

Tourism is also a major industry. However, Norway introduced new regulations in 2024 to protect the environment. For example, ships may now be limited to 200 people.

The ecosystem of Svalbard is both beautiful and fragile. Many seabirds use the islands as a breeding ground. The land is home to polar bears, reindeer, and the Arctic fox.

To protect this environment, much of the land is preserved. Seven national parks and 23 nature reserves cover two-thirds of the archipelago. These protections help keep the land largely untouched. Scientists study the region to understand Arctic changes. This work connects Svalbard to global climate research. The islands remain a vital link in understanding our planet's natural systems.
