It is located in the Arctic Ocean, north of Norway. The island is bordered by the Norwegian Sea and the Greenland Sea. Spitsbergen is the 36th largest island in the world. It is also the largest island belonging to Norway. The island serves as a major center for Arctic research and tourism. It is a unique part of the world with a very specific legal status.

The island's geography is defined by extreme natural features. It contains many high mountains, deep fjords, and large glaciers.

In 1999, ice covered approximately 58.5% of the island's total area. The climate is classified as Arctic. However, temperatures are significantly higher than other locations at the same latitude. This warmer Arctic climate allows for a unique growing season. The flora benefits from the midnight sun, which provides light during the polar night.

Spitsbergen supports a variety of specialized wildlife. Many seabirds use the island as a breeding ground. The land also supports polar bears, arctic foxes, and reindeer.

Marine mammals live in the surrounding cold waters. Because the environment is so fragile, six national parks have been established. These parks help protect the untouched landscape from human impact. The ecosystem relies on the balance between the cold sea and the seasonal light.

The history of Spitsbergen began with European exploration. Dutch navigator Willem Barentsz discovered the island in 1596.

He named it Spitsbergen, which means "pointed mountains" in Dutch. This name describes the sharp appearance of the island's peaks.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the island was used as a whaling base.

During this era, some English whalers even called the area "Greenland."

Economic activity on the island changed significantly over time. After the whaling era ended, coal mining began at the end of the 19th century. This led to the creation of several permanent communities. Today, two main mining companies operate on the island. These are the Norwegian Store Norske and the Russian Arktikugol. Barentsburg is a notable Russian mining community.

Other sites, such as the former community of Pyramiden, have been abandoned.

The legal status of the island was settled by the Spitsbergen Treaty of 1920. This international treaty recognized Norwegian sovereignty over the entire Svalbard archipelago. However, the treaty also created a free economic zone. It also established the islands as a demilitarized zone. Citizens from any of the over 40 signatory nations may settle there. The Norwegian government manages the region through a governor based in Longyearbyen. This system allows for international presence while maintaining Norwegian administration.

Modern life on Spitsbergen requires specialized transport and infrastructure. There are no roads connecting the different settlements. Instead, people rely on snowmobiles, aircraft, and boats to travel between locations. Svalbard Airport in Longyearbyen is the primary entry point.
