He spent his life searching for new paths across the ocean. Most of his journeys were meant to find a way to Asia. People called these routes passages. He wanted to find a way through the Arctic or around North America. His work helped people learn more about the map of the world. He made many important discoveries in Canada and the United States.

Finding a new path was a very hard job. In 1607, Hudson sailed a ship named the Hopewell. He tried to find a route above the Arctic Circle. He thought the sun would melt the ice in the summer. This would let ships sail through the top of the world. However, the ice was often too thick to pass. He reached places like Greenland and Spitsbergen.

He even named some of the land he saw. These trips were difficult and often ended with him turning back.

In 1609, Hudson worked for the Dutch East India Company. He sailed a ship called the Halve Maen. This name means "Half Moon" in English.

Instead of going east, he decided to sail west. He reached the coast of North America. He explored a large river that is now called the Hudson River. This river is in the New York area. His trip helped the Dutch start trading in that region. He even traded with the Native Americans for furs.

His final voyage began in 1610 with support from English companies. He sailed near Iceland and Greenland.

He was the first European to see the Hudson Strait. He also found a huge area of water called Hudson Bay. The crew was very excited at first. They hoped they had finally found the Northwest Passage. But the ship became trapped in ice in James Bay. The crew had to stay on the shore for the winter.

Things turned bad in the spring of 1611. The crew wanted to go home, but Hudson wanted to keep searching. This led to a mutiny. A mutiny is when a crew rebels against their leader.
