Life in the Arctic was very hard for the men.

Willem Barentsz was a Dutch navigator, cartographer, and Arctic explorer. A cartographer is a person who makes maps. Barentsz was born around 1550 in Formerum, on the island of Terschelling. His name was actually a patronymic. This means "Barentszoon" stands for "Barent's son." Barentsz spent his career searching for the Northeast Passage. This was a sea route through the Arctic Ocean to reach China for trade. He believed that open water existed north of Siberia. He reasoned that the sun shone 24 hours a day in the Arctic. He thought this constant light would melt the sea ice.
His first expedition began on June 5, 1594. He sailed from the island of Texel on a ship named Mercury. This was one of three ships sent in different directions. The crew encountered a polar bear at Williams Island. They tried to capture the bear to bring it back to Holland. However, the bear became violent and had to be killed. The crew also found a herd of about 200 walruses at the Orange Islands. They tried to hunt them for ivory tusks. The cold steel of their tools shattered against the tough hides. Barentsz reached the west coast of Novaya Zemlya. Large icebergs eventually forced the crew to turn back. This first trip was still considered a success.
In 1595, Prince Maurice of Orange organized a second voyage. Barentsz served as the chief pilot and conductor. This expedition included six ships loaded with merchant goods. The crew traveled between the Siberian coast and Vaygach Island. On August 30, they met about 20 Samoyed people. A crewmember was able to speak their language. However, the journey was not without danger. A small crew sent to search for crystals was attacked by a polar bear. Two sailors were killed in the attack. The expedition was ultimately considered a failure. The Kara Sea had frozen due to unexpected weather.

On July 17, the ships reached Novaya Zemlya. The crew wanted to avoid the ice by heading for the Vaigatch Strait. Instead, their ship became stuck in icebergs and floes. The 16-man crew was stranded on a barren bluff for nearly a year. They used driftwood and ship lumber to build a lodge. They called this shelter Het Behouden Huys, which means "The Saved House."
Life on the ice was a constant struggle for survival. In January 1597, the crew recorded a polar mirage. This is an atmospheric anomaly known as the Novaya Zemlya effect.
