Three planets orbit this star with periods of 12, 59.5, and 459 days. Another system, HD 137388, contains a planet that is 79 times as massive as Earth. This planet orbits its star every 330 days. Scientists used doppler spectroscopy to find these planetary worlds. This method tracks the movement of stars caused by orbiting planets.
Apus also contains deep-sky objects like globular clusters. A globular cluster is a large, spherical group of many stars. One such cluster is named NGC 6101. It is located about 50,000 light-years away from Earth. This cluster is roughly 160 light-years across and is 13 billion years old. It contains bright stars known as blue stragglers. Scientists believe these stars form when two stars merge together. 
The constellation is deeply connected to the structure of our galaxy. Much of the area covered by Apus is filled by the Milky Way. You can find faint spiral galaxies in this region, such as IC 4633. This galaxy is surrounded by large, faint clouds of light called nebulae. These clouds are thought to be lit by many distant stars. Studying Apus helps astronomers understand the Milky Way and the life cycles of stars. It connects individual star systems to the larger history of the universe.
