During that time, he cataloged nearly 10,000 southern stars. He imagined this constellation as a clock with a pendulum and a second hand. He created fourteen new constellations to honor scientific tools. In 1763, his work was published with the Latin name Horologium. This name comes from an ancient Greek word for a time-telling tool. 
Scientists have found many interesting things hidden in this part of space. Four different star systems in Horologium are known to have exoplanets. These are planets that orbit stars other than our own Sun. One star, Gliese 1061, is only 12 light-years away from us. It has three planets, and one is in its habitable zone. This change happens over a period of approximately 13 months. There are other variable stars here too, such as the semiregular variable red giant TW Horologii. This star is classified as a carbon star and is 1,370 light-years away.
Some stars in Horologium are also part of complex systems. Delta Horologii is the second-brightest star at magnitude 4.93. It is actually a true binary system. It consists of a white main sequence star and a fainter companion. The system is located 179 light-years from Earth. Another interesting star is Lambda Horologii. It is a yellow-white giant star that spins at 140km/second. This rapid rotation causes the star to become mildly flattened at its poles, a shape known as oblate. 
The history of this constellation began with the French astronomer Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille. In 1756, he first described it as l'Horloge à pendule & à secondes. This translates to a clock with a pendulum and a seconds hand. Lacaille created these descriptions after staying at the Cape of Good Hope for two years. During that time, he cataloged almost 10,000 southern stars. He designed fourteen new constellations to honor scientific instruments. This reflected the spirit of the Age of Enlightenment. His work was later Latinised to Horologium in a 1763 catalogue. 
Modern astronomers have found many exoplanets within this constellation. An exoplanet is a planet that orbits a star other than our Sun. Four star systems in Horologium are known to host these planets. One notable example is Gliese 1061. This is a red dwarf star located only 12 light-years from Earth. It is the 20th-closest single star system to our Sun. In 2019, scientists announced it has three planets. One of these planets sits in the habitable zone, where conditions might allow life. Another planet was found orbiting the star WASP-120, which completes its orbit every 3.6 days. 
Beyond individual stars, Horologium contains massive deep-sky objects. The barred spiral galaxy NGC 1512 is located near Alpha Horologii. It is currently merging with a smaller dwarf lenticular galaxy called NGC 1510. This galactic merger has been occurring for about 400 million years.
