Some stories say he was born a noble man. Other versions say he was a yeoman. A yeoman was a commoner, but not a peasant. This means he was somewhere in the middle. He is often shown wearing Lincoln green clothes.

Many people know the idea of robbing the rich to help the poor.

This idea became very famous in a book from 1592. Robin Hood did not always fight for the poor in the oldest stories. In one early book, he gave a large loan to a knight. He did not ask for the money back. He also said he would give money to the next poor traveler. His band of friends is called the Merry Men. They included people like Little John and Will Scarlet.

History shows us how the legend changed over many years. The first clear mention of his rhymes was in a poem from the 1370s.

The earliest surviving ballads are from the late 1400s. These old stories show his dislike for the Sheriff of Nottingham. They also show his skill with a bow. A famous collection of stories called A Gest of Robyn Hode was printed in 1500. This book helped bring his many adventures together. Even in these old tales, he was a very important figure.

Different people have added new characters to the story over time.

For a long time, his friends did not include Maid Marian. A jolly man named Friar Tuck appeared in plays around 1475. Some people think these characters came from May Day festivals. These were special games and plays held in the spring. These festivals helped spread the stories to more people. The legend also changed how people saw Robin's rank. In the 1500s, some writers said he was an Earl. This made him a noble instead of a commoner.

Today, we see Robin Hood in many different places.

You can find his story in books, movies, and on TV. The name "Robin Hood" is even used to describe a rebel. Some people think he might have been a real person. Historians have looked for clues since the late 1200s. They have found eight different ideas about where he came from. Some think the name was just a fake name for bandits. Even so, his tales remain a huge part of English culture.
