The story follows a Saxon knight named Wilfred of Ivanhoe. He is in trouble with his father, Cedric of Rotherwood. This is because Wilfred supports the Norman King Richard the Lionheart. The plot includes many exciting scenes like a large tournament.

It also shows a trial for witchcraft and life with outlaws. Characters like the healer Rebecca and the outlaw Robin of Locksley are very important. Even a mysterious knight called "Desdichado" plays a big part in the action.

Walter Scott worked very hard to write this book. In June 1819, he was feeling very sick with stomach pains. Because of this, he had to dictate the story to helpers. His helpers were named John Ballantyne and William Laidlaw. Scott used these men to write down his words. Later, he was able to use a pen to finish the work. He completed the whole manuscript in early November 1819.

To make the story feel real, Scott studied many old books. He read works by Joseph Strutt about English customs and sports. He also used history books by Robert Henry and Sharon Turner. These books helped him understand the Middle Ages. He even used old poems and tales about Robin Hood. This research helped him describe knights and their armor correctly. The first edition was published by Archibald Constable in Edinburgh. It cost about £1 10s to buy back then.

This book connects to many things we know today. It helped shape how people imagine King Richard and Robin Hood. Many people think of these heroes differently because of Scott's writing.

Even famous thinkers like John Ruskin praised the book. It brought the spirit of the Middle Ages to life for readers. Today, we still read different versions of this great story.
