Many people in Iran still use his name today. His story is a big part of Iranian folklore and tradition. He represents a hero who makes a huge sacrifice for his people. This story helps explain how certain lands were divided long ago.

The legend begins during a war between Iranians and Turanians. The two sides wanted to find peace. They agreed to use a bow and arrow to set a border. The land within the arrow's flight would belong to Manuchehr and the Iranians. The rest would go to the general Afrasiab. An angel named Isfandaramad told Manuchehr to build a special bow. Arash was chosen to shoot the arrow at dawn.

Arash's shot was a very special thing that happened. The arrow traveled for a very long time. Some stories say it flew for forty days. Other stories say it flew from dawn until noon or sunset. It traveled hundreds of miles away from the mountain where it started. The arrow finally landed on a walnut tree near the Oxus River.

This landing marked the new border between the two lands.

There are many different versions of this ancient story. In some books, Arash is lost or dies from the shot. In the writings of al-Tabari, he is honored by the people. He becomes a leader of the archers and lives a long life. The name Arash appears in many old forms. In the Avesta, it is called Erekhsha, which means "of the swift arrow."

Some places like Mount Damavand are linked to his shot.

Modern writers still find Arash very interesting. A poet named Siavash Kasraie wrote a long poem about him in 1959. This poem shows his sacrifice to help his country. Another writer named Bahram Beyzai wrote a piece called Āraš. This work was performed on stages all around the world.
