It is the highest peak in Iran and Western Asia. It is also the highest volcano in all of Asia. This mountain is a stratovolcano, which means it was built by layers of ash and lava. Scientists call it a dormant volcano. This means it is not extinct, but it is not erupting right now. It sits in the middle of the Alborz mountain range.

The mountain is very important to the people of Iran. It even appears on the back of the 10,000 rial banknote.

Geologists study how this mountain was formed. The Alborz range rose because the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates crashed into each other. This collision created a hot region that helped the volcano grow. Deep underground, there is a magma chamber, which is a place where melted rock stays. This chamber has a hot inner part and a cooler outer part. Most of the volcanic activity happens near the summit.

Some lava flows are found near a secondary crater called Haji Dela. The mountain's steep shape comes from many layers of trachyte, andesite, and basalt. These are different types of volcanic rocks.

Damavand has a very long history of activity. Volcanic events in this area started almost 1.78 million years ago. The current shape of the mountain began to build about 600,000 years ago. There was a very large explosion about 280,000 years ago. The last time the volcano erupted was around 5300 BCE.

Even though it has been quiet for a long time, the mountain is still active. You can see steam and gas coming out of vents near the top. These vents are called fumaroles. Scientists also watch the ground to see if it moves or expands.

This mountain is a special place in Persian stories and legends. In old myths, a three-headed dragon named Aži Dahāka was chained inside the mountain. Other stories say a tyrant named Zahhāk was also trapped in a cave there. The mountain is a symbol of strength in Persian poetry. One poem calls it a "white giant" and the "dome of the world."

It is even part of the Volcanic Seven Summits, which is a famous climbing challenge. Because it is so important, Iran celebrates "Damavand National Day" every year on July 2nd.

Many living things call this mountain home. In the rivers, you might find brown trout. Animals like the Persian leopard and the Syrian brown bear live in the region. High up on the slopes, there are glaciers, which are large masses of ice. The largest one is called the Yakhar Glacier.

When these glaciers melt, they create rivers that flow through Iran. People also visit the hot springs at the bottom of the mountain. The Larijan Hot Spring is very famous. People use its mineral water to help treat skin diseases.
