Mount Damavand is a massive dormant stratovolcano located in northern Iran.

A stratovolcano is a mountain built from layers of ash and lava flows. Damavand is the highest peak in Iran and Western Asia. It is also the highest volcano in all of Asia. In the Eastern Hemisphere, it ranks as the third-highest volcano. This follows only Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Elbrus. The mountain sits within the Alborz mountain range. It separates the Iranian plateau from the Caspian Sea.

Geologists believe the mountain formed through tectonic activity. The Alborz range rose because the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates collided. This collision is similar to the one that created the Himalaya. While such collisions do not usually cause volcanoes, a hot region was created here. This heat allowed the volcano to rise. Deep below the surface, a magma chamber exists. This chamber contains a hot, molten inner region. It is surrounded by an area of dense, cooled magma. The top of this chamber is located south of the summit.

Volcanic activity in this region began in the Pleistocene epoch. This was almost 1.78 million years ago. The current structure of the mountain began building 600,000 years ago. The mountain is made of several types of volcanic rock. These include trachyte, andesite, and basalt. Most eruptions involve lava flows. However, some small pyroclastic flow deposits exist in nearby drainages. One massive explosive event occurred about 280,000 years ago. The last recorded eruption took place around 5300 BCE.

Although the volcano is dormant, it is not extinct. Ongoing thermal activity shows the mountain is still active. Near the summit, small vents called fumaroles release steam and gas.

Scientists monitor the ground for movement. Between 2003 and 2008, the mountain showed subsidence and horizontal expansion. This movement was driven by gravity rather than magma. Mineral hot springs also dot the flanks and base of the mountain. These springs provide evidence of heat near the surface. The Larijan Hot Spring is a very important site. People use its mineral water to treat skin diseases.

Mount Damavand holds a deep place in Persian mythology. In Zoroastrian texts, a three-headed dragon named Aži Dahāka was chained inside the mountain. Other legends say the tyrant Zahhāk was trapped in a cave there. In the epic Shahnameh, the mountain is said to have magical powers. It is a symbol of resistance in Persian literature. One famous poem by Mohammad Taqī Bahār calls it the "dome of the world." Because of this importance, the mountain appears on the 10,000 rial banknote.

Iran even celebrates "Damavand National Day" every July 2nd.

The mountain supports a wide variety of life. High on the slopes, you can find glaciers. The largest of these is the Yakhar Glacier. These glaciers are the source of several permanent rivers in Iran. In these rivers, brown trout live. The region is also home to the Persian leopard and the Syrian brown bear. High-altitude birds like the Caspian snowcock and the golden eagle live here. Many flowers grow in the foothills, such as red poppies. A specific iris, Iris barnumiae demawendica, is named after the mountain itself.

For adventurers, Damavand is a major destination. There are at least 16 known routes to the summit. Some routes are very dangerous and require ice climbing. The southern route is the most popular for climbers. The Northeastern route is the longest and takes two days. The western route is famous for its beautiful sunset views. Climbers use various shelters, such as the Simurgh shelter. Mount Damavand is also part of the Volcanic Seven Summits. This is a famous mountaineering challenge for climbers around the world.
