It forms a natural border between Turkmenistan and Iran. The range stretches from the Caspian Sea in the northwest to the Hari River in the southeast. In the southwest, it meets the eastern ends of the Alborz mountains. Together, these mountains are part of a much larger system called the Alpide belt.

This range defines the landscape for many people living in the region.

The mountains were created through a process called the Alpine orogeny. This geological event occurred during the Miocene and Pliocene epochs. The process began as the Tethys Sea closed. During this time, the Arabian plate collided with the Iranian plate. This collision pushed the Iranian plate against the Turan Platform. The movement of the Eurasian plate also played a role. These forces folded the rocks that had settled in a large basin.

Most of the range consists of Lower Cretaceous sedimentary rocks. Some Jurassic rocks are also present in the southeastern sections.

There are many theories regarding the origin of the name Kopet Dag. One researcher, Vambery, suggested it comes from the Turkmen words "kop" and "dag." In this view, the name means "many mountains." Another theory suggests the Persian word "koppeh" means a pile or a heap. This would make the name mean "piled or hilly mountains." However, other scholars like Ataniyazov disagree with these ideas. He suggests the name comes from the Persian word "kuhibet." This term translates to "bad mountain."

The topography of the Kopet Dag is quite varied. It features dry and sandy slopes alongside steep ravines. Visitors can also find mountain plateaus and rolling foothills. The westernmost foothills are specifically known as the Kürendag Ridge. Because the area is undergoing tectonic transformation, it is prone to severe earthquakes. The region has experienced quakes exceeding 7.0 on the Richter scale.

One major event occurred on October 5, 1948. A 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck the area and killed more than 110,000 people.

Human history is deeply connected to these mountains. Archaeological evidence shows that people settled in the northern foothills during the Neolithic period. At a site called Jeitun, people lived in mud brick houses around 6000 BC. The foothills near Ashgabat also contain the remains of Nisa. Nisa was an ancient city belonging to the Parthian Empire.

These sites show that the well-watered foothills have supported life for thousands of years.

The natural environment of the Kopet Dag is rich with plant life. The woodlands contain many species of fruit trees and shrubs. These plants have been useful to humans through selective breeding. You can find wild grapes, figs, and pomegranates in the region. Other useful plants include wild apples, pears, and cherries.

Almonds and hawthorns are also part of the local ecosystem.

Modern use of the mountains includes recreation and tourism. There is a ski resort located within the range. It was officially opened by the former president of Turkmenistan, Saparmurat Niyazov. This is a unique feature because the mountains often lack snow.

Despite the climate, the government has focused on building this resort. The range remains a central part of the geography and culture of both Turkmenistan and Iran.
