The Binalud Mountains are a significant mountain range in northeastern Iran. They are located within the Razavi Khorasan Province. This range stretches in a northwest-southeast direction. It sits to the southeast of the Caspian Sea.

The mountains run between two important regions. These are the Nishapur and Mashhad regions. The city of Mashhad sits in the northeastern part of the range. The city of Nishapur lies in the southwestern section. The range helps define the landscape of this part of the country.

The formation of these mountains involved massive movements of the Earth. The range is part of the faulting caused by a tectonic collision. This collision happened between the Arabian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. This process is known as the Alpine orogeny. This mountain-building event occurred during the Miocene and Pliocene epochs. The range also absorbs the motion of Central Iran. It moves on the Arabian plate at a steady rate every year. This constant movement continues to shape the local geography.

Geology provides a complex history of the Binalud Mountains. The range is made of many different types of ancient rock. Most of the mountains consist of Triassic and Jurassic rocks. In the northwestern part, Jurassic rocks are the most common. The western section contains a smaller portion of Paleozoic rocks. A strip of Eocene rocks runs along the southern margin. This strip follows the same northwest-southeast direction as the rest of the range. These different layers show how the Earth changed over millions of years.

Volcanic activity also played a major role in the area. On the northwestern side of the Eocene rock strip, there is a specific section. These rocks are volcanic in origin. This means they were formed from cooled volcanic material. These volcanic rocks, specifically trachytes and andesites, are very important. They have undergone weathering and breaking over time. This process created the conditions necessary for precious minerals to form. The volcanic history of the mountains is visible in the very ground itself.

One specific mineral from this range is world-famous. The weathered volcanic rocks produce Nishabur turquoise. This beautiful blue stone is a major product of the region. The main turquoise mines are located in a specific area. They sit about 50 kilometres northwest of the city of Nishapur. These mines are found near a village called Madan. The presence of this turquoise is a direct result of the mountain's unique geology.

Mount Binalud is the most prominent peak in the area. It is situated somewhat to the west of the main Binalud Range. This peak reaches an elevation of 3,211 metres. This height makes it the highest point in the Binalud Mountains. It is also the highest point in the entire Razavi Khorasan Province. The mountain serves as a massive landmark for the surrounding provinces. Its height and position make it a central feature of the northeastern Iranian landscape.

The Binalud Mountains exist in a larger geographic pattern. They are part of a wide arc of mountains. This arc curves from the northwest to the southeast. The Aladagh Mountains also sit in this same arc. However, the Aladagh Mountains are located further northwest. They sit in the Province of North Khorasan. Even though they are far apart, they follow a similar structural path. This connection helps geologists understand the larger movement of the Earth's crust in this region.
