One peak is very high. We call it Mount Binalud. It is 3,211 metres tall. This is the highest point in the province. The mountains formed when two giant plates of land hit each other. These are the Arabian Plate and the Eurasian Plate.

The mountains are made of many types of rocks. Some rocks are from a time called the Eocene. These rocks are volcanic. They help make a famous blue stone. This stone is called turquoise. The main mines are near a village called Madan. They are about 50 kilometres northwest of Nishapur.
