Aladagh Mountains

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Aladagh Mountains are a big mountain range. They sit in Iran. They are in the North Khorasan province. This area is southeast of the Caspian Sea. The mountains are 25 kilometres south of Bojnurd. Bojnurd is the capital city of that province. In the west, these mountains meet the Alborz Mountains. The range runs from the northwest to the southeast.

The name Aladagh comes from an old language. It has two parts. The first part means speckled or many-colored. The second part means mountain. So, the name means speckled mountains.

The highest point is Mount Shahjahan. It is in the southeast part of the province. This peak is near a place called Esfarayen. These mountains are made of very old rocks. Most of the rocks are from the Jurassic period. Some parts have even older rocks. The mountains are far from the wet coast. Because of this, they have a different climate. They are not like the wet mountains in the west.
