Bojnord has a complex and layered history. Local tradition suggests the Qarai Turks controlled the area. This occurred following the Mongol invasion in the 13th century. The city is considered to be of recent origin. Some believe the Safavid rulers built it for the Kurdish Şadiyan tribe. This settlement was intended to strengthen Safavid borders against hostile Turkmens. Historically, the city featured a defensive wall. It was divided into eleven quarters and contained bazaars and four mosques.

Natural disasters have heavily influenced how the city looks today. In 1849, a revolt took place that destroyed the city. Later, severe earthquakes struck in 1896 and 1929. These seismic events destroyed the city and its surrounding areas. Consequently, the city was rebuilt in a modern manner. This new version lacks the historical or recent fortifications of the past. In 1997, another major earthquake occurred. This quake had a magnitude of 6.5 and caused significant damage and many fatalities.

The population of Bojnord has grown steadily over recent decades. In the 2006 National Census, the population was 172,772 people. This total was spread across 44,217 households. By the 2011 census, the number rose to 199,791 people in 56,761 households. The 2016 census showed further growth to 228,931 people. These residents live in 67,335 households. This growth shows the city's expanding role in the province.
