This range is a very important part of the landscape in this region.

The mountains were made through a process called the Alpine orogeny. This happened when the Arabian plate and the Iranian plate crashed into each other. This collision pushed the Iranian plate against the Turan Platform. The movement folded the rocks that had settled in a large basin. Most of the range is made of Lower Cretaceous sedimentary rocks. Some Jurassic rocks are also found in the southeast.

People have many different ideas about the name Kopet Dag. One idea is that it means "many mountains." This comes from the Turkmen word "kop" for many and "dag" for mountain. Another idea says it means "piled mountains." However, some scholars believe it comes from a Persian word meaning "bad mountain." This might be because the wind and cold made it hard to cross.
