Absheron Peninsula

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Absheron Peninsula is a unique piece of land in Azerbaijan.

It reaches out into the western coast of the Caspian Sea. Many people say the shape of Azerbaijan looks like an eagle. The peninsula looks like the beak of that eagle. It is the easternmost part of the Caucasus Mountains. The name Absheron comes from the Persian words for salty waters.

The land here is a gently rolling plain. It is not very mountainous, but it has small hills. You might see deep ravines or salt lakes across the landscape. At the very edge, there are sand dunes called Shah Dili. This area is also called the Shah Spit. It is now part of the Absheron National Park. The ground is made of many layers like clay and sand.

History shows that this place has changed a lot over time. In the late 1800s, people found petroleum here. Petroleum is a type of oil used for fuel. This caused many workers from Iran to move to the area. Starting in the 1870s, it was a site for early oil production. Today, you can still see old, rusting oil derricks. These tall towers show how much work happened there.

Many people call this area home. Baku is the largest and most crowded city in Azerbaijan. It sits right on the peninsula. The city of Sumqayit is also a large urban area nearby. There are other places like Khyrdalan and Pirallahi. The peninsula is divided into four main districts. Two are urban cities, while three are suburban areas.

The weather in Absheron is very dry and windy. It has a semi-arid climate with warm summers. The winters are cool and sometimes wet. Because it does not rain much, the land is a dry steppe. Farmers must use irrigation to help their crops grow. Some industries have caused problems for the land and sea. Scientists say the area faces many environmental challenges.
