Absheron Peninsula

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Absheron Peninsula is a piece of land in Azerbaijan.

It reaches out into the Caspian Sea. Some say the shape of Azerbaijan looks like an eagle. The Absheron is like the beak of that eagle. The name means "salty waters" in Persian.

This place is very dry and windy all year. It has warm summers and cool winters. Most of the land is a dry steppe or semi-desert. Because it is so dry, farmers must use irrigation to water crops. The land is mostly a flat plain with small hills. You can find salt lakes and deep ravines here. At the edge, there are sand dunes called Shah Dili.

Many people live here. The city of Baku is in this area. Baku is the largest city in Azerbaijan. Other cities like Sumqayit are also nearby.
