Many smaller streams and rivers feed the Aras. The Kocagün, Dallı, and Orman streams help start it. These streams come from the Bingöl Mountains. The Aras meets the Akhuryan River southeast of Digor. Other big rivers flow into it too. The Hrazdan River flows from Armenia into the river. The Qareh Sū comes from the Sabalān Mountains in Iran.

In Armenian tradition, the name comes from a man named Arast. He was a great-grandson of a famous leader named Haik. Long ago, the river was part of the Kura–Araxes culture. This was a group of prehistoric people living in the valleys. Some old stories say the river once formed a large lake. Even Roman writers wrote about the river in their books.

History has changed how people see the river's borders. In the 1800s, the river became a political boundary. It was used to mark the line between the Russian Empire and Qajar Iran. Some people even use the river to mark the line between Europe and Asia.

The Aras Valley is a wonderful place for nature lovers. A bird research center sits in the valley in Turkey.
