Many people once saw this deity as a protector of many things. He was linked to light, the sun, and friendship. He also watched over justice and truth. People believed he helped them keep their promises. This made him a god of contracts and oaths. His name even comes from a word meaning "that which causes binding."

Mithra had many special jobs to do in the world. He was a guardian of cattle and the harvest. He also watched over the waters to help pastures grow. Some holy books describe him in amazing ways. They say he has a thousand ears and ten thousand eyes. This means he can see and hear everything that happens. He is described as someone who never sleeps and is always watchful.

History shows that Mithra was important to many leaders. In the Achaemenid period, kings used his name in their writings. For example, Artaxerxes II asked Mithra to protect him and his work. This was special because earlier kings had only named one god. Other leaders like Cyrus the Younger also swore by Mithra. Even Darius III called upon the sun and Mithra before a big battle.

There are many different ways people have understood Mithra over time. In some Zoroastrian texts, he is one of three judges. These judges meet at the Chinvat Bridge to judge souls. Some people thought Mithra was the same as the sun itself. Others saw him as a mediator who brought balance between sides. Even though people had different ideas, he remained a powerful figure. Scholars study these different views to learn about the past.

Today, we can still see the influence of Mithra in different places. The seventh month of the Iranian calendar is named "Mihr." There is also a special festival called Mehregan to honor him. In space, a near-Earth asteroid carries the name Mithra. This shows how an ancient idea can reach into the modern world. We can still find his name in many old stories and traditions. It is a way to connect with history through words and names.
