Minerva was a very important goddess in the Roman religion.

She was the goddess of wisdom, justice, and law. Many people also looked to her for victory in battle. She acted as a sponsor for trade and the arts.

She was also linked to medicine, weaving, and many different crafts. Some thinkers, like Marcus Terentius Varro, even saw her as a personification of the plan for the entire universe.

Minerva had many different roles that worked together. While she was a goddess of war, she was not about violence. Instead, she focused on strategy and smart plans. Archaeologists believe she acted more like a general than a fighter.

She was also a protector of young women. At a sanctuary in Lavinium, researchers found items that suggest she watched over girls as they grew up. She was even linked to healing and the treatment of illness.

Her history is full of different ideas about where she came from. Starting in the second century BC, Romans began to treat her like the Greek goddess Athena.

Some linguists think her name might come from a word meaning "thought." Others believe her name might be linked to the moon or even come from the Etruscans. In Rome, she was a member of the Capitoline Triad. This was a special group of three gods that included Jupiter and Juno.

Many specific details help us understand how people honored her.

She was often shown as a tall and muscular woman. She frequently wore armor and carried a spear. An owl is her most famous sacred animal. This owl is often called the "owl of Minerva." It was a symbol of her deep wisdom and knowledge. People also sometimes used the snake or the olive tree to represent her.

Minerva is also famous because of the many myths told about her. One famous story says she was born from the head of Jupiter. In this myth, Vulcan used a hammer to help her emerge.

Another story tells of a contest with Neptune. They competed to see who could provide a better gift for a city. Minerva won the contest by creating the olive tree. These stories helped people understand her power and her special gifts.
