A trickster is a special kind of character found in stories all around the world.

These characters use their smarts or secret knowledge to play tricks. They often disobey normal rules or act in ways that surprise people. A trickster might be a god, a spirit, or even a human. Some tricksters are very clever, while others can be quite foolish. They often cross boundaries between different worlds or social groups. By breaking rules, they change how life works for everyone else.

In many cultures, these characters help explain how the world began.

For example, Norse mythology tells of Loki, a famous mischief-maker. Loki is a shapeshifter, which means he can change his physical form. One story from the Poetic Edda says he became a mare. He later gave birth to Odin's eight-legged horse named Sleipnir. This shows how tricksters can change their gender or shape. They often disrupt the natural order to create something new.

Native American traditions have many important trickster figures.

The Coyote spirit is very well known in the Southwest. In some stories, Coyote is a wise hero who helps people. He once taught humans how to catch salmon using logs. In other tales, he is a villain who causes trouble. Some Crow traditions say Old Man Coyote made people from mud. He also gave names to animals like buffalo and bear. These stories show that life has many different sides.

Tricksters appear in many different lands with different names. In West Africa, Anansi the spider is a crafty trickster. African-American folklore features a rabbit known as Brer Rabbit. In the Pacific Northwest, the Raven spirit is a common character. Many traditions use tricksters during sacred ceremonies. Some believe people must laugh before they can truly pray. This laughter helps people stay open to new ideas. Tricksters are essential to the idea of creation and birth.

We can still see the trickster in stories we watch today.
