This might mean wearing clothes that are not traditionally feminine. It can also mean enjoying activities like sports or playing with "boy toys" like cars. People use this word to describe girls who are spirited or boisterous. Being a tomboy is often a way to express a love for the outdoors. It can also be a way to show independence and strength. Some people even feel pride in having been a tomboy when they were young.

The meaning of the word has shifted many times throughout history. In 1533, the term was used to describe a rude or boisterous boy. By the 1570s, it described a woman who was seen as bold or immodest. Finally, in the late 1590s and early 1600s, it became the word we know today. It then meant a girl who was a wild, romping, or spirited child. The word itself is a compound word made from "tom" and "boy." Understanding these changes helps us see how society views gender over time.

In the United States, ideas about girls changed a lot during the 1800s. Before the mid-19th century, many people believed women should be fragile and stay at home. This idea was known as the "Cult of True Womanhood." However, the Long Depression in the late 1800s changed these expectations. Because the economy was unstable, young women joined the workforce to help their families. They needed to be physically strong to do these new jobs. This shift helped lay the groundwork for tomboyism to grow.

The American Civil War also played a big role in this change. When many men left to fight in the war, women had to take over "men's duties." They had to protect their homes and even manage family finances. This period helped society realize that women could be very capable and healthy. During this time, many mothers focused on making their daughters physically strong. This encouraged more girls to act in ways that were once only for boys. These events helped move society away from older, more restrictive rules.

Today, the way we see tomboys is very different than in the past. In the West, it is now normal for girls to wear comfortable clothes like pants. Many girls also play sports and play with all kinds of peers. Because these things are so common, the word "tomboy" is used less often now. Some experts say the term can even be seen as unfair or sexist. In other places, like China, the term "jiáxiǎozi" is used as an insult. Regardless of the name, being a tomboy is often about exploring curiosity and identity.
