Femininity

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Femininity is a set of behaviors and roles. These traits are often linked to women and girls. People often list traits like being gentle, kind, or empathetic. Some people also use words like modesty and warmth. These ideas can change based on where a person lives.

Different cultures have different ways of seeing these traits. Because of this, femininity is a very big and complex topic. It is different from biological sex or being a woman.

Many people wonder where these ideas come from. Some think they come from biology and hormones. For example, researchers in 1959 studied how hormones in the womb might affect behavior. Others believe femininity is a social idea. They think society teaches girls how to act through toys and school.

This is called socialization. In 1949, Simone de Beauvoir said that people are not born women. Instead, she said people become women through their lives in society. This idea helped many people think about gender in new ways.

History shows us how these ideas have changed over time. In the early Middle Ages, women were often called by their roles. They might be called a maiden, a wife, or a widow. Around the 1300s, a sickness called the Black Death changed England. It killed nearly half of the population. This change created new opportunities for women in society.

Around 1380, the word femininity first appeared in the works of Chaucer. These shifts show that what is "feminine" is not always the same.

Scientists have also tried to study these traits with numbers. In the 1930s, Lewis Terman and Catherine Cox Miles created a model. They thought femininity and masculinity were opposites. Later, in the 1970s, researchers began to look at things differently. They studied a concept called androgyny.

Androgyny describes people who show both masculine and feminine traits. New tests showed that these two types of traits can exist together. They do not have to be opposites at all.

Clothing and appearance are also ways people show femininity. In Western cultures, people often link the color pink to girls. In the past, high heels were actually worn by men in France.

In some Muslim countries, a headscarf called a hijab is a symbol of modesty. These examples show that beauty standards change across the world. What one person thinks is feminine, another might see differently. It is all part of how humans express themselves.
