Vesta is a very important object in the asteroid belt.

It is the second-largest asteroid by mass and volume. Only the dwarf planet Ceres is larger than Vesta. This asteroid is also very bright. You can sometimes see it with your naked eye.

Scientists think Vesta is a rocky protoplanet. This means it is a large object that helped form the rocky planets like Earth. It makes up about 9% of the mass in the entire asteroid belt.

Many things happened to shape Vesta over a long time. One billion and two billion years ago, huge collisions occurred. These hits were very strong and ejected many fragments.

These fragments eventually fell to Earth as meteorites. We call these specific types HED meteorites. They provide a rich source of information about Vesta's makeup. These impacts also left two enormous craters in the southern hemisphere.

One of these massive basins is called Rheasilvia.

A German astronomer named Heinrich Olbers discovered Vesta. He found it on 29 March 1807.

He found it in the constellation Virgo. Olbers gave the honor of naming it to Carl Friedrich Gauss. Gauss chose the name after the Roman goddess of the home and hearth.

This was the fourth asteroid ever identified. Because of this, its formal number is 4 Vesta. It was once even called a planet.

Vesta has many unique physical facts. Its mean diameter is about 525 kilometers.

The surface area is roughly the size of Nigeria or Tanzania. Its temperature can change a lot. It can reach about 327 Kelvin when the Sun is overhead.

It can drop to about 160 Kelvin at the winter pole. Vesta also rotates quite fast. One full spin takes only about 5.3 hours.

NASA sent a spacecraft named Dawn to study Vesta.

Dawn entered orbit on 16 July 2011. The spacecraft stayed for about one year. It left Vesta on 5 September 2012.

Dawn helped scientists understand the history of the solar system. It provided data about the core and the crust. Researchers still examine this data today. This work helps us learn how planets grow and change over time.
