Hygiea is a very large asteroid in our solar system.

It lives in the outer part of the main asteroid belt. This belt is the space between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Hygiea is the fourth-largest asteroid in this belt by mass and volume. It is so big that it makes up 3% of the entire belt's mass. Because it is shaped like a round ball, some scientists think it might be a dwarf planet.

This round shape likely happened because of a giant impact. About 2 to 3 billion years ago, a huge object hit Hygiea. This crash shattered the asteroid into many different pieces. Over time, those pieces pulled back together to form a nearly spherical body. This event also created the Hygiea family of asteroids.

This family includes over 7,000 smaller asteroids that share similar paths and materials. They all share a history that traces back to that one big hit.

An Italian astronomer named Annibale de Gasparis discovered Hygiea in 1849.

He was working at the Capodimonte Observatory in Naples, Italy. While looking at stars, he saw a tiny object that was not on his charts. He checked it again on April 14 and April 17 to see if it moved. Since the object moved, he knew it was a new object in space. He named it after Hygieia, the Greek goddess of health.

Hygiea has a very interesting surface made of dark minerals. It contains silicate minerals, carbonates, and even water ice.

Scientists believe there is a lot of water ice hidden under the surface. These details make Hygiea look very much like the dwarf planet Ceres. This similarity suggests that both objects started in a similar way long ago. Hygiea also has two large craters named Serpens and Calix on its surface.

Watching Hygiea move helps scientists learn more about its weight. As it travels in its oval path, other asteroids sometimes pass very close to it.

The gravity of Hygiea pulls on these passing objects and changes their paths. By measuring these changes, astronomers can calculate Hygiea's mass. Hygiea stays in a special rhythm with the planets Jupiter and Saturn. This connection helps us understand how objects in the asteroid belt move and change over time.
