Enceladus is a small but amazing moon of Saturn.

It is the sixth-largest moon around Saturn. It is also the 18th largest moon in our whole Solar System. The moon is covered in fresh, white snow. This snow is hundreds of meters thick. Because the surface is so bright, it is one of the most reflective bodies in space.

This brightness makes the surface temperature at noon very cold. It stays much colder than other objects that absorb light.

This moon has a very busy way it works.

Near the south pole, there are things called cryovolcanoes. These are like ice volcanoes. They shoot geyser-like jets of water vapour and ice into space. These jets can move 250 kilograms of water every second. They also shoot out salt crystals and other materials. Some of this material falls back as snow. The rest escapes to help make Saturn's E ring.

People have been studying Enceladus for a long time.

William Herschel discovered the moon on August 28, 1789. He used a huge 40-foot telescope in England. Later, the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft flew by Saturn in 1980 and 1981. The Cassini spacecraft arrived later to study it even more closely. Cassini began many flybys starting in 2005. This mission helped us see the plumes and the surface in great detail.

Scientists have found many important facts about this moon.

In 2014, NASA reported that a large ocean exists under the ice. This subsurface ocean is made of liquid water. It is about 30 kilometers thick. The moon stays warm because of tidal forces. This happens because Enceladus is in an orbital resonance with the moon Dione. This means Enceladus completes two orbits for every one orbit of Dione. This movement creates heat inside the moon.

This heat might make the moon a special place.

Cassini found evidence of hydrothermal activity. This is a way that heat and chemicals move through water. This activity might make the ocean a place where life could live. It might be similar to places on Earth where tiny organisms live near hot vents. The methane found in the plumes might even come from such living things. This makes Enceladus a very exciting place to study.
