It lives in the main asteroid belt. This belt is between the planets Mars and Jupiter. An astronomer named Annibale de Gasparis found it in 1849.

He saw a new object while looking at the stars. He named it after the Greek goddess of health.

Hygiea is the fourth-largest asteroid in the belt. It is very big and heavy. It is shaped like a round ball.

Because of this shape, some scientists think it might be a dwarf planet. A dwarf planet is a large object that is round like a planet.

The surface of Hygiea is dark. It is made of minerals and water ice.

It looks a lot like the dwarf planet Ceres. Long ago, a giant hit Hygiea. This impact broke it into many pieces. These pieces now form the Hygiea family. This family has over 7,000 smaller asteroids.
