Ceres is a very special world in our solar system. It is a dwarf planet located in the main asteroid belt. This belt is a large ring of rocks between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.

Ceres is the largest object in this belt that does not have a moon. It is also the only dwarf planet that is not located beyond the orbit of Neptune. Because it is so close to us, it is a very important place for scientists to study.

Scientists have learned a lot about how Ceres works through space missions. The surface is a mix of rock, ice, and minerals like clay and carbonates.

Deep inside the dwarf planet, there might be an ocean of liquid water. This water is likely very salty, which we call brine. This liquid can move through the outer mantle toward the surface. When it reaches the top, it can create cryovolcanoes, which are volcanoes that erupt ice.

One such volcano is named Ahuna Mons.

People first found Ceres a long time ago. Giuseppe Piazzi discovered it on 1 January 1801. He was working at the Palermo Astronomical Observatory in Sicily.

At first, Piazzi thought he had found a comet. He eventually realized it was moving in a very steady way. A mathematician named Carl Friedrich Gauss helped find its path in space. This allowed other astronomers to find Ceres again after it moved too close to the Sun.

Ceres has many interesting facts and numbers. Its diameter is about one quarter the size of our Moon. It takes about 4.6 Earth years to orbit the Sun once.

Even though it is large for an asteroid, it is too dim to see without a telescope. Its brightness, or magnitude, stays between 6.7 and 9.3. In 2015, the NASA spacecraft Dawn arrived to study it closely.

This mission helped us understand that Ceres has a very thin atmosphere of water vapor.

Understanding Ceres helps us learn about the rest of our solar system. It sits in a gap that many astronomers expected to find a planet in. For a long time, people actually called Ceres a planet.

Later, they called it an asteroid. Today, we use the term dwarf planet because Ceres shares its path with many other rocks. It does not clear its neighborhood of other objects. Learning about Ceres helps us see how different worlds can be made of ice and rock.
