Deep inside the dwarf planet, there might be an ocean of liquid water. This water is likely very salty, which we call brine. This liquid can move through the outer mantle toward the surface. When it reaches the top, it can create cryovolcanoes, which are volcanoes that erupt ice. One such volcano is named Ahuna Mons.

People first found Ceres a long time ago. Giuseppe Piazzi discovered it on 1 January 1801. He was working at the Palermo Astronomical Observatory in Sicily.

At first, Piazzi thought he had found a comet. He eventually realized it was moving in a very steady way. A mathematician named Carl Friedrich Gauss helped find its path in space. This allowed other astronomers to find Ceres again after it moved too close to the Sun.

Furthermore, it is the only dwarf planet in our solar system that is not located beyond the orbit of Neptune. The physical structure of Ceres is quite complex. Gravity data suggests that the body is partially differentiated, meaning its materials have sorted themselves into layers. It likely possesses a mantle and core made of a muddy mixture of ice and rock. Above this lies a crust that is relatively strong but less dense. This crust contains at most thirty percent ice by volume. Recent studies suggest Ceres may even hold an internal ocean of liquid water. This liquid is likely a brine, which is water with a high salt content. Brines can flow through the outer mantle and reach the surface. This process can create cryovolcanoes, which are volcanoes that erupt ice instead of molten rock. One such feature is named Ahuna Mons.

Ceres also maintains a very thin and temporary atmosphere. This atmosphere consists of water vapor that vents from specific locations on the surface. Because the atmosphere is so tenuous, it does not stay for long periods. The surface itself is a mixture of water, ice, and various hydrated minerals. These include substances like clay and carbonates.

Before this mission, very little was known about the actual surface of the dwarf planet.

The discovery of Ceres was a major event in the history of astronomy. In the late 18th century, many astronomers believed a hidden planet existed between Mars and Jupiter. This idea was supported by the Titius–Bode law, a mathematical formula that predicted planetary orbits. The law suggested a planet should exist at an orbital radius of approximately 2.8 astronomical units (AU). This distance is about 420 million kilometers from the Sun. In 1800, a group of astronomers known as the "celestial police" began a methodical search for this object.

On 1 January 1801, Giuseppe Piazzi discovered Ceres at the Palermo Astronomical Observatory in Sicily. Piazzi was originally searching for a star in a specific catalogue. Instead, he found a moving, starlike object. He initially thought he had found a comet. However, he noticed its movement was very slow and uniform. Piazzi announced his discovery in January 1801. Because the object moved, it soon became difficult for other astronomers to find. The mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss developed a new method to determine its orbit. This allowed astronomers to predict its position and recover the object by the end of 1801.

Ceres has undergone many changes in how scientists classify it. For over fifty years, it was listed in textbooks as a planet. This was because it was discovered alongside other large bodies like Pallas, Juno, and Vesta. As more asteroids were found, astronomers realized Ceres belonged to a different class of objects. In 1867, it was given the designation 1 Ceres. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) created a new definition for a planet. To be a planet, a body must orbit a star, be nearly round, and have "cleared the neighborhood" around its orbit. Ceres does not dominate its orbit because it shares the space with thousands of other asteroids. Therefore, it was classified as a dwarf planet.

There are several important measurements that define the scale of Ceres. Its diameter is approximately 940 kilometers, which is about one quarter the size of the Moon. Its brightness, or apparent magnitude, ranges from 6.7 to 9.3. This means it is usually too dim to see with the naked eye unless the sky is extremely dark. Ceres orbits the Sun once every 4.6 Earth years. Its orbit is slightly tilted, with an inclination of 10.6 degrees relative to Earth's orbit.
