A dwarf planet is a special kind of world in our Solar System. These objects orbit the Sun directly. They are massive enough that their own gravity pulls them into a round shape. However, they are not big enough to be major planets. Major planets have orbital dominance, which means they clear their path of other objects. Dwarf planets do not do this. Instead, they share their space with many other small bodies.

How a dwarf planet works involves its size and gravity. To be round, an object must have enough mass for its insides to act like a soft material. This allows gravity to pull it into a sphere. But to be a major planet, it must be the boss of its orbit. It must pull in or push away nearby objects. Dwarf planets lack this power. They are large enough to look like worlds, but they cannot clear their neighborhood.

The history of these worlds changed many times. In 1801, astronomers found Ceres. For a long time, people thought it was a planet. By 1851, the number of known planets reached 23. Scientists then started calling smaller bodies asteroids. In 1930, Pluto was discovered. Most people thought there were nine major planets for almost 50 years. In 1978, the discovery of Pluto's moon, Charon, changed things. It helped scientists see that Pluto was much smaller than they first thought.

Today, we have specific rules for these objects. In August 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) met to decide on new rules. They created the dwarf planet category. This moved Pluto, Ceres, and Eris into this new group. Astronomers agree on the nine largest candidates. These include Ceres, Pluto, Eris, Haumea, Makemake, Gonggong, Quaoar, Orcus, and Salacia. The tenth candidate is Sedna, but it is a borderline case.

Learning about dwarf planets helps us understand space better. Some dwarf planets, like Pluto and Ceres, have been visited by spacecraft. The Dawn mission visited Ceres. The New Horizons mission visited Pluto. These missions showed that dwarf planets can be geologically active. This means they can change over time. Seven of the largest dwarf planets also have moons. Having a moon helps scientists measure a dwarf planet's mass. This tells them how dense the world is.
