What exactly is a planet? The answer is not as simple as it seems.

For a long time, people used different rules to name these objects. The word itself comes from ancient Greece. Back then, astronomers saw certain lights moving across the sky. They called these "wandering stars" to show they moved. This was different from the "fixed stars" that stayed still.

These early observers saw five planets with just their eyes. They were Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, and Saturn. Some people even included the Sun and Moon in their list.

How we define a planet depends on how we look at it.

Modern science uses two main ways to think about them. One way is the dynamical dominance definition. This means the object is big enough to control its area. It decides the fate of smaller objects nearby. The other way is the geophysical definition. This focuses on the shape of the object itself. It means the object is round because of its own gravity. This shape is called hydrostatic equilibrium.

History shows us that our understanding of space has shifted.

In the past, many believed Earth sat still at the center. This was called the geocentric model. Later, scientists like Nicolaus Copernicus changed this view. They showed that Earth is actually a planet orbiting the Sun. This was a huge change in how we see our home. Galileo also helped by showing that Earth moves in a circle. Even the Moon was reclassified as a satellite instead of a planet.

New discoveries have often forced us to change our rules.

In 1781, William Herschel found Uranus while looking at the sky. In 1846, Neptune was discovered because of its effect on Uranus. Later, in 1930, Pluto was found in our solar system. For a long time, Pluto was called a planet. However, in January 2005, a new object named Eris was found. Eris was even more massive than Pluto. This discovery forced the International Astronomical Union to make new rules.

Today, the rules for planets in our solar system are very specific.

First, a planet must orbit the Sun. Second, it must be massive enough to be round. Third, it must have "cleared its neighborhood." This means it has moved smaller objects out of its path. Pluto meets the first two rules. But it does not meet the third rule. Because of this, Pluto is not a planet under these rules. Some scientists still argue about these definitions today.
