Ahura Mazda is a very important figure in the Zoroastrian faith.

His name has a deep meaning in old languages. The word Ahura means "lord" and Mazda means "wisdom." Some people call him Ormazd or Horomazes. He is often seen as a sky deity. Many followers believe he is the source of all goodness. He is the first spirit mentioned in the Yasna, which is a sacred text.

There are many different stories about how he works in the world. In the Zoroastrian tradition, a man named Zoroaster had a vision at age 30. While he was fetching water at dawn, he saw a shining figure. This figure led him to the presence of Ahura Mazda. From this meeting, Zoroaster learned the rules of his religion. He believed Ahura Mazda created helpful spirits called yazatas. These spirits help him in a great struggle against evil.

History shows us how people honored him over many centuries. During the Achaemenid period, kings like Darius the Great wrote about him.

One famous example is the Behistun Inscription. Early Persian kings did not use statues of him. Instead, they used an empty chariot pulled by white horses. They did this to invite him to join their army in battle. Later, in the late 5th century BC, people began to make images of him.

Different groups had different ways of thinking about him. In the Sassanid period, things changed for his followers. An iconoclastic movement began, which means people stopped using images in worship.

Instead of statues, they might use a symbol of a man on a horse. Another group called the Zurvanists had their own stories. They believed a figure named Zurvan was the father of Ahura Mazda. This shows how many different ideas can exist about the same spirit.

We can see how these ideas connect to the wider world. Ancient writers like Plutarch wrote about him in Greek. He described a battle between light and darkness. He said Ahura Mazda was like light, while his rival was like darkness. This idea of good versus evil is found in many different cultures. Even today, historians study these ancient names and symbols. They help us understand how people long ago thought about the universe.
