The Avesta is a collection of sacred writings for Zoroastrianism.

These texts are very important to the faith. They are written in a special language called Avestan. This language uses its own unique alphabet. The Avesta is the largest group of literature from the Old Iranian period. It contains the oldest writings in any Iranian language. These texts help people understand the history and beliefs of their tradition.

For a very long time, these words were not written down. Instead, they were shared through oral tradition. This means people memorized the texts and spoke them out loud. This happened over many centuries. Some parts were composed between the 15th and 4th centuries BCE. During this time, the texts were passed from person to person. Some parts were very fixed and did not change much. Other parts were more fluid and changed with each new poet-priest. Eventually, the way people shared these words became fixed for everyone.

History tells us many different stories about how the Avesta was made.

One legend says the god Ahura Mazda created twenty-one books. These books were supposedly brought to a leader named Zoroaster. Another story says a priest named Tansar collected many scattered works. He only kept the parts he thought were truly authoritative. Later, a priest named Adurbad Mahraspandan helped finish this important work. Modern scholars do not follow these legends. They believe the texts grew independently through many generations of priests.

Writing the Avesta changed everything for the tradition.

Around the 5th or 6th century CE, people created the Avestan alphabet. This allowed them to make the Sasanian Avesta. This was a large, multi-volume edition of the texts. Sadly, this big collection was lost after the Islamic conquest of Iran. Only a small part of it survived. The oldest piece of a surviving manuscript is from 1323 CE. Today, there are more than 300 manuscripts cataloged by researchers. Many of these were written after the 17th century.

We can still study the Avesta today by looking at its parts. The most important text is called the Yasna. It is used during a specific ceremony. Other parts include the Vendidad and the Visperad. There are also shorter texts in the Khordeh Avesta, or "Little Avesta."

These surviving pieces stayed alive because priests used them in regular worship. Because they were spoken in ceremonies, the words were not forgotten. This helped the most important parts of the faith reach us today.
