People often wonder about his early life and his family. He belonged to the lesser nobility, but his exact parents are not certain. One letter from 1297 shows his father's name was Alan Wallace. Some stories say he might have been born near Ellerslie in Ayrshire. Other poems suggest he came from a different place called Renfrewshire.

Even if we do not know everything, he was a very important man in history.

Scotland faced many hard times before Wallace became a leader. King Alexander III ruled during a time of peace. However, he died after falling from his horse in 1286. This left Scotland without a clear ruler for a while. King Edward I of England eventually stepped in to help settle the matter. But Edward wanted to rule Scotland himself. He treated the Scottish king, John Balliol, like a servant. This led to many fights between the two lands.

Wallace began his military career by fighting against English rule. In May 1297, he killed an English official named William de Heselrig. He then joined other leaders to fight for Scotland. In September 1297, Wallace and Andrew Moray led a great victory. This happened at the Battle of Stirling Bridge.

The English army was much larger than the Scottish army. However, the bridge was very narrow. The Scots waited until many English soldiers had crossed. Then, the Scots attacked and won a big victory. This win made Wallace a hero to many.

After his victory, Wallace became a Guardian of Scotland. He led raids into northern England and returned with many things. In late 1297, he was even knighted in a ceremony. But the English king sent a much larger army in 1298. Wallace fought them at the Battle of Falkirk in July. This time, the Scots did not win the battle.

Even though he died long ago, Wallace is still a legend. He is the main character in many famous books and poems. One famous poem by Blind Harry was written in the 15th century. People also tell his story in movies like Braveheart.
