It crosses the Vltava river in the Czech Republic. This bridge is very important for history. For a long time, it was the only way to cross the river. It connected Prague Castle to the Old Town. This path helped trade between Eastern and Western Europe. It also sat on the path used by Bohemian kings.

The bridge works using a design called a bow bridge. It has 16 stone arches to hold it up. These arches are shielded by ice guards. Three tall towers protect the bridge. Two towers are on the Lesser Quarter side. One tower is on the Old Town side.

A long line of 30 statues decorates the bridge. Most of these are in the baroque style. This is a fancy type of art. The original statues were placed there around the year 1700. Today, you see replicas, which are copies of the originals.

King Charles IV started building the bridge in 1357. He wanted to replace the old Judith Bridge. That old bridge was damaged by a flood in 1342. Legend says the King laid the first stone at 5:31 am on July 9. He chose this time because it was a palindrome. A palindrome is a number that reads the same forward and backward. He thought this would make the bridge stronger.

The work took 45 years to finish. The bridge was finally completed in 1402.

The bridge has survived many hard times and floods. In 1496, the third arch broke down. A huge flood in 1890 was very bad. It destroyed three arches and two pillars. Thousands of logs and rafts hit the bridge. This caused two statues to fall into the river.

Workers spent two years fixing the damage. The bridge reopened on November 19, 1892. It cost 665,000 crowns to complete those repairs.

Today, the bridge is for people walking only. All cars and buses are not allowed. This change happened after repairs between 1965 and 1978. Workers are still busy caring for the bridge. A new round of repairs started in late 2019. This work will last for twenty years. It will cost between 45 and 60 million CZK.
