A catastrophic flood in September 1890 caused massive damage. Thousands of floating logs and rafts formed a barrier against the bridge. The pressure was so great that three arches were torn down. Two pillars also collapsed because the water undermined them. During this event, two statues by Ferdinand Brokoff fell into the river. Repairing this damage took two years and cost 665,000 crowns. The bridge finally reopened to the public on November 19, 1892.
In the 20th century, the bridge saw many changes in transportation. It once carried horse trams and later electric trams. By 1908, buses were also using the span. However, a major repair between 1965 and 1978 changed everything. Workers stabilized the pillars and replaced broken stone blocks. After this work, all vehicular traffic was banned. Today, the bridge is accessible to pedestrians only. 
Modern efforts focus on preserving the bridge for the future. A reconstruction began after the 2002 floods to stabilize two specific pillars. This work, done between 2008 and 2010, included a new hydroisolation system. This system helps protect the bridge from water damage. However, the restoration faced criticism from European conservation professionals. Some experts felt the new stones did not match the historical ones. UNESCO even noted that the restoration lacked adequate conservation advice. Currently, a twenty-year inspection and repair process is underway. Started in late 2019, it is expected to cost between 45 and 60 million CZK.
