It is the third-largest city in the state, following Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. The city sits in a hilly region and is surrounded by several rivers. The Koel and Sankha rivers meet at a place called Vedvyas. When they join, they form the Brahmani River. This location was chosen because the area is very rich in minerals.

The soil here is red and contains a lot of iron ore. This makes the area perfect for making steel.

Because of these minerals, Rourkela is often called the Steel City of Odisha. It is home to a huge integrated steel plant. This plant belongs to the Steel Authority of India Limited. The city also has a famous technical school called the National Institute of Technology.

The city is divided into two main parts for living. One part is the Steel Township, which has many green spaces. It even has art made from steel. The other part is called the Civil Township.

A long road called the Ring Road connects many different neighborhoods.

The history of the city began with a big dream for India. After India became independent, the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, wanted to build more industry. He wanted to turn India into an industrial state. To help with this, the government worked with German companies named Krupp and Demag.

In the 1950s and 1960s, many Germans lived in Rourkela. It was actually the largest German colony outside of Germany at that time. These workers helped teach local people how to use new steel technology.

Building the city changed the land and the lives of many people. The government had to get a lot of land for the steel plant and for the Mandira Dam. This meant that many families had to move to new places like Jalda or Bisra.

Some people even moved across the Koel River to find new homes. Even though moving was hard, many people found new jobs in the steel plants. The city has grown very fast since those early days. In fact, it was named India's Fastest Moving City in the East Zone.

Today, Rourkela is a modern place that is still growing. It was chosen as a "smart city" in 2016 to help improve life for everyone. This means the city uses new ideas to grow its economy and keep things clean.

Many people speak Odia there, but you can also hear Hindi and other languages. The city is a mix of old stories and new technology. It remains a very important center for industry in all of India.
