Raipur has a very long and interesting history. Long ago, the area was known as Dakshina Kosala. It was once part of the Maurya Empire. In the 6th century, the Gupta family had power in this region. Later, a Buddhist kingdom ruled in the area. Eventually, the Kalachuri family gained control. One king of the Raipur branch even conquered 18 different forts. This history is why the state is named Chhattisgarh, which means 36 forts.
