The city plays a big role in how India gets its electricity. Bilaspur and the areas around it produce 10,000 megawatts of power. This is a huge amount of energy for the country to use. Nearby, in a place called Sipat, there is a very large power plant. A special line also helps send electricity from the region all the way to Delhi. The city is also a center for coal, as the South Eastern Coalfields Limited is based there. This makes the area a vital part of the nation's energy system.

Bilaspur has a very long and interesting history. Some stories say the city was named after a fisherwoman named Bilasa from the 17th century. Other people believe it comes from the name of the bright Palash trees found nearby. In the past, the area was part of a place called Dakshina Kosala. Different groups, like the Kalachuri dynasty, ruled the land for many years. The city grew much more during the time of the Maratha Empire around 1741. Later, the British East India Company took over the management of the district in 1818.

Life in Bilaspur is full of color and unique things. The region is famous for a special kind of rice called doobraj rice. This rice is known for being very aromatic. People also make beautiful, soft sarees using colorful kosa silk. A special organization helps collect seeds to make sure these silk worms can thrive. The city is also working to become a "Smart City" to help it grow.
