geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Himachal Pradesh is a state located in the northern part of India. It sits within the Western Himalayas, making it one of India's 13 mountain states. The name itself describes the landscape. In Sanskrit, "Himachal" means "snowy slopes." The word "Pradesh" means "state." Together, the name translates to "snow-laden province." This refers to the state being sheltered in the "aanchal," or the lap, of the snowy Himalayas.

The geography of the state is defined by extreme variations in elevation. Several major mountain ranges shape the land. The Zanskar range runs through the northeastern part. The Great Himalayan range spans the northern and eastern sections. The Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges, which are part of the lesser Himalayas, form the core regions. Finally, the Shiwalik range, also called the outer Himalayas, covers the southern and western areas. The highest point is Reo Purgyil, which reaches 6,816 meters.

A complex drainage system flows through these mountains. The state provides water to the Indus and Ganges basins. Perennial rivers, which flow all year, criss-cross the mountain chain. These rivers are fed by rainfall and melting snow. The Chandra and Bhaga rivers join to form the Chenab river. The Beas river flows through the Kullu and Kangra valleys. The Sutlej river enters the state near Shipki La. Other important rivers include the Ravi, the Yamuna, the Pabbar, and the Giri.

The climate changes depending on how high the land is. Southern areas are hot and humid with a subtropical climate. As elevation increases, the climate becomes cold and alpine. The northern and eastern ranges feature glacial conditions. The state experiences three main seasons: summer, winter, and the rainy season. Summer lasts from mid-April until the end of June. During this time, most areas become very hot. Winter lasts from late November until mid-March. In the alpine tracts, snowfall is very common.

Human history in this region began in prehistoric times. Various tribes, such as the Koli and Khasa, inhabited the hills. The Indus Valley Civilisation lived in the foothills between 2250 and 1750 BCE. Later, the Gupta Empire conquered small republics known as Janapadas. The region was often ruled by local chieftains and Rajput principalities. Various powers, including the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughals, sought control. The Kingdom of Gorkha also annexed parts of the state in the early 1800s. Eventually, the British emerged as the paramount power in the region.

Following India's independence, the state underwent several political changes. In 1948, the Chief Commissioner's Province of Himachal Pradesh was organized. This combined 30 small princely states. The state became a Union Territory in 1956. In 1966, hilly areas from the Punjab state were merged into Himachal. This helped the state grow in size. Finally, Himachal Pradesh was granted full statehood on January 25, 1971. Yashwant Singh Parmar served as its first chief minister.

Hydropower and tourism also contribute significantly. The state is highly developed in some areas. As of 2016, 99.5% of households had electricity. It was also named India's second open-defecation-free state in 2016. In 2017, a study named it India's least corrupt state. The region is also famous for being welcoming. In 2026, it ranked 8th globally as a welcoming region.
