It occupies a rugged and mountainous region. To the north and east, it borders China, specifically Tibet and Yunnan. To the west, it shares a border with India in Arunachal Pradesh. To the south, it meets the Shan State. The state's capital is the town of Myitkyina. Other significant urban centers include Bhamo, Mohnyin, and Putao.

The geography of the state is defined by extreme natural features. It contains Hkakabo Razi, which is the highest mountain in Myanmar. This peak forms the southern tip of the Himalayas. The state also contains Indawgyi Lake, which is a large inland lake. Kachin State is notable for its environmental protection. It contains three national parks, the most of any administrative division in Myanmar.

History shows that many different powers have controlled this territory. The Nanzhao Kingdom controlled much of Upper Burma, including this area, during the 8th and 9th centuries.

The term "Kachin" was actually a label used by the British during the colonial period. It referred to various ethnic groups living between the Bamar heartland and China. These groups include the Rawang, Lisu, Jingpo, Zaiwa, Lashi, and Lawngwaw. Traditionally, Kachin society relied on shifting hill agriculture. Social structures were often based on chieftains who relied on kinsmen for support. Anthropologists have also noted a specific custom of maternal cousin marriage in these groups.

Kachin State was officially formed in 1948. This happened after the Panglong Agreement in February 1947. In that agreement, the Shan, Kachin, and Chin peoples discussed internal autonomy. The state was created from the British civil districts of Bhamo and Myitkyina, plus the northern district of Putao. To celebrate, the government held the Manau festival for three days in January 1948. This tradition of holding Manau on January 10 continued until the 1962 coup.

The population of the state is diverse and complex. In 2014, the population was recorded at 1,689,441 people. While the Kachin people are a plurality, the Bamar and Shan people make up significant minorities. Regarding religion, Buddhists form the largest group at 64.0%. Christians make up 33.8% of the population.

Other groups include Muslims, Hindus, and animists. The state also has a significant economy involving trade with China, particularly involving jadeite. Historically, about 75% of all Kachin jadeite went to China.

Political instability has led to significant conflict in recent decades. A major armed group, the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), was established in 1960. This followed the government's decision to name Buddhism as the state religion. A ceasefire was signed in 1994, but it broke down in June 2011. This resumed fighting occurred after the government ordered the Kachin forces to become a Border Guard Force. The conflict caused thousands of people to become internally displaced persons (IDPs).

By October 2012, over 100,000 IDPs were seeking shelter in various camps. Many of these people were living in areas controlled by the KIO.
