It sits in a very high and mountainous area. To the north and east, it borders China. To the west, it borders India. The state also touches the Shan State to the south. This region is home to Hkakabo Razi. This is the highest mountain in all of Myanmar. It forms the southern tip of the massive Himalayas.

You can also find Indawgyi Lake here. This is a very large lake found inland. Kachin State even has three national parks. This is more than any other part of Myanmar.

Many different groups of people live in this land. The term "Kachin" was used by the British. They used it for groups living between the Bamar heartland and China.

The Bamar and Shan people are also major groups. In 2014, the total population was over 1.6 million people. Most people here are Buddhist. About 33.8% of the people are Christians.

History shows that many kingdoms once ruled this area. The Nanzhao Kingdom controlled much of this land long ago. Later, the Dali Kingdom also ruled the Kachin people. In the 14th century, the Möng Mao group used this land too.

In the 1890s, British forces carried out expeditions here. The British also occupied a place called Hpimaw in 1910. These events changed how the land was managed for a long time.

Kachin State became an official state in 1948. It was formed from the Bhamo and Myitkyina districts. It also included the large northern district of Putao. Before this, the people had an agreement called the Panglong Agreement. This agreement was made in February 1947. It helped plan for how the state would work. The capital city of the state is Myitkyina.

Other important towns are Bhamo, Mohnyin, and Putao. The people celebrated the new state with a festival called Manau.

There has been much conflict in the region recently. Fighting between the government and the Kachin Independence Army began again in 2011. This happened after a peace agreement from 1994 was broken. This fighting caused many people to leave their homes. These people are called internally displaced persons. Many had to stay in refugee camps. Some people had to move to areas controlled by the KIO. This has made life very difficult for many families in the north.
