Arakan Mountains

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Arakan Mountains sit in western Myanmar. They are also called the Rakhine Yoma. These mountains lie between the coast and the Central Myanmar Basin. The Irrawaddy River flows through that big basin. The range starts at Cape Negrais in the south. It reaches up to Manipur in India in the north.

This range is part of a huge chain of ridges. These ridges arc through many places like Assam and Nagaland. They even sink under the Bay of Bengal. The mountains rise again as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

These mountains formed a long time ago. They were made by the movement of the Earth. The Indian Plate hit the Eurasian Plate. This collision caused the land to fold and push up. This created the Naga-Patkai foldbelt.

The mountains are very long. They stretch over 600 miles. About 250 miles of this is actual mountain land. The highest peak is named Khonu Msung. Some people call it Mount Victoria.

For a long time, the mountains acted like a wall. They kept the Rakhine coast separate from central Myanmar. This helped the Rakhine people develop their own culture. It also helped them keep their own language. The mountains stopped armies from invading the coast. This allowed cities like Mrauk U and Waithali to grow.

These cities were the heart of Arakan civilization. Later, there were fierce battles in these hills. Between 1943 and 1944, Japanese and British troops fought here. The British forces won those battles.

Nature works differently on each side of the range. The mountains block the big monsoon rains. This makes the western slopes very wet. They often get over 100 inches of rain each month. The eastern slopes are much drier because of this.

These wet forests are a special home for many living things. You can find elephants living in the Chin Hills forests. A tiny animal called the Arakan forest turtle lives here too. People thought this turtle was extinct. They found it again in 1994.

Traveling through the mountains is possible today. There is a road that goes from Ann to Minbu. Another all-weather road goes from Taungup to Pyay. This road sits on the Irrawaddy River.

The name Arakan comes from a Sanskrit word. That word is Rakshasa. It means demon. It was a name used for the people in the region. The mountains remain a huge part of the land. They shape the weather and the lives of people.
