Arakan Mountains

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Arakan Mountains are a significant mountain range located in western Myanmar. They are also known as the Rakhine Yoma. Technically, scientists call them the Southern Indo-Burman Range. These mountains sit between the coast of Rakhine State and the Central Myanmar Basin. The Irrawaddy River flows through that large central basin. The range stretches from Cape Negrais in the south to Manipur, India, in the north.

This range is part of a much larger system of parallel ridges. These ridges arc through several regions, including Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram. The mountains include several distinct sections. These are the Naga Hills, the Chin Hills, and the Patkai range. The Patkai range contains the Lushai Hills. Interestingly, the mountain chain continues underwater. It is submerged in the Bay of Bengal for a long distance. It then emerges again as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The formation of these mountains is the result of plate tectonics. Long ago, the Indian Plate collided with the Eurasian Plate. This massive collision occurred near the boundary of India and Myanmar. The pressure from this collision caused the earth to compress. This compression created the Naga-Patkai foldbelt.

This geological process pushed the land upward to form the ridges we see today.

The Arakan Mountains are a very long feature of the landscape. The range is over 600 miles long. However, about 250 miles of that length consists of actual mountains. The highest point in the entire range is Khonu Msung. Some people also call this peak Mount Victoria.

Because of their height and position, the mountains shape the lives of people nearby.

Historically, these mountains have acted as a massive natural barrier. They separate the Rakhine coast from the rest of Myanmar. This separation helped the Rakhine people develop uniquely. They grew their own distinct culture and language separate from the Burmese. The mountains also acted as a shield against invasions. This allowed the coastal region to remain a separate political entity.

Because of this protection, cities like Mrauk U and Waithali became the centers of Arakan civilization.

Warfare has also taken place within these mountains. Between January 1943 and March 1944, fierce battles occurred here. This happened during the Japanese occupation of Burma. The Japanese 33rd and 55th Divisions fought against the British military. The British forces were positioned on the coastal side of the range. Ultimately, the British forces won these battles.

The mountains also control the local climate through a process involving monsoon winds. The range acts as a barrier to the southwestern monsoon rains. This creates a big difference between the two sides of the mountains. The western slopes are extraordinarily wet. They often receive over 100 inches of rain per month. In contrast, the eastern slopes are much drier.

This weather creates a unique ecoregion called the Chin Hills-Arakan Yoma montane forests. This environment is home to elephant populations. It is also the home of the Arakan forest turtle. This turtle is a critically endangered species. For a long time, scientists believed the turtle was extinct. However, it was rediscovered in 1994.

Modern infrastructure allows people to travel through this rugged terrain. There is a road that crosses the mountains between Ann and Minbu. There is also an all-weather road connecting Taungup to Pyay. This road sits on the Irrawaddy River.

The name "Arakan" itself has deep roots. It comes from the Sanskrit word Rakshasa, which means demon. This was a term used to describe the inhabitants of the region.
