The city is a busy center for its province. It is also known as a "Design City" by UNESCO.

The land around the city is mostly flat or has gentle hills. However, some areas to the west and northwest have tall limestone hills. These hills have steep, vertical cliffs that stand out. Many hill tribe people live in villages in these hilly areas. These groups include the Karen, Akha, Lisu, Miao, and Hmong. About 12.5 percent of the local people are from these tribes. The city is a large place with many people living there.

History tells us that King Mangrai founded the city in 1262.

He made it the capital for his dynasty. Long ago, an earthquake happened at a temple called Wat Phra Kaeo. This earthquake split a temple building and revealed a jade statue. People call this famous statue the Emerald Buddha. Later, the city pillar was moved to a new home. It is now at Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong. People call this spot the "navel" or the center of the city.

The weather in Chiang Rai is tropical with wet and dry seasons. Winters are usually warm and quite dry. The temperature rises until April, which is a very hot month. From late April until October, the monsoon season brings heavy rain. These rainy days can be cooler, but the nights stay warm. It is very rare for it to get cold enough for snow. In fact, snow was only recorded once in 1955.

Getting to Chiang Rai can be done in several ways. You can take a flight from Bangkok in about 90 minutes.
