Because it is near the tropics, the air is hot and humid. Most of the rain falls during the summer months.

Water is a big part of this landscape. Several rivers and small creeks flow through the state. Some of these rivers actually flow from south to north. This happens because of how the mountains are shaped. The main river is called the Thanlwin River.

You can see a large bridge crossing this river. Other important rivers include the Thaungyin and the Gyaing. These rivers help the land stay green and wet.

History in this region has changed many times. Long ago, it was part of the Bagan Empire. From the 13th to the 16th centuries, it belonged to the Hanthawaddy kingdom. Later, it became part of the Taungoo and Konbaung Dynasties. The British took control of some parts after wars in 1824 and 1852. In 1989, the name changed from Karen State to Kayin State. The Karen National Union has been in a long conflict here since 1949. This has made much of the state a battlefield for a long time.

Many people live in Kayin State. The population grew to over 1.5 million people by 2014. Most people living here are Karen.

Many people follow the Buddhist religion. There are also Christians, Muslims, and Hindus living there. Because the land is so mountainous, people live in many small villages. Most of these villages have fewer than 40 homes. This means many people live spread out across the countryside.

Life in the state involves a lot of farming and travel. People grow much rice in large paddy fields. They also grow rubber trees and coffee.
