It sits where the mighty Ayeyarwady River flows into the sea. This area is called a delta. A delta is a flat piece of land made by a river. The region is surrounded by many different places. To the northwest, it meets the Rakhine State. To the north and east, it sits near the Bago and Yangon Regions. The Bay of Bengal borders the south and west.

This area is very important for the country. It is known as the "granary of Burma" because it grows so much food.

Most of the land is used for farming. Many people clear large areas to grow rice in paddy fields. This makes the region the main rice producer for the whole country. Besides rice, farmers grow things like maize, sesame, and beans.

The water is also very important for life here. The river branches out into famous rivers like the Ngawun, Pathein, and Toe. There are also many lakes in the region. People catch fish, prawns, and other seafood to eat and sell. This helps the local economy stay strong.

History shows that this land has changed many times. Long ago, it was part of the Mon kingdoms. Different groups like the Burmese, Arakanese, and Mon ruled the area at different times.

In the 1850s, the British gained control of the delta. This led to a time of very fast growth. Many people moved from the north to the south to find work. They came to work on the new, large farms. This changed the region into a major place for exporting rice to the world.

Today, more than 6.5 million people live in this region.

Most of the people are Bamar, and many follow the Buddhist religion. The capital city is Pathein, which has many historic temples. The region is divided into eight districts, such as Pathein and Labutta. Some of these districts are quite new. For example, Kyonpyaw and Myanaung were only formed in 2019. People use Pathein Airport to travel to and from the area.

Life in the delta can be both beautiful and difficult. Many people enjoy visiting the coast for a holiday. Chaungtha Beach and Ngwesaung Beach are popular spots for travelers. However, the region has also faced very hard times. In May 2008, a huge storm called Cyclone Nargis hit the area. It brought 120 mph winds and heavy rain. This was a very serious natural disaster for the people living there. It showed how much the weather can affect the delta.
